|2013 Big Sit Bird Count Highlights
The team of “Birds-I-View Birders” participated in the 2013 Big Sit Bird
Count, officially on Saturday, October 12th and unofficially on Sunday, October
13th near the BIV Bird Garden on Ellis Blvd in Jefferson City. A forecast fraught
with thunderstorms forced us to move the “circle” (designated counting area)
from the garden area to the shelter of the covered overhang at the front of the
building. In the end, it was only rainy a few hours early in the morning and
cloudy the rest of the day, however the alternate location did give us an
opportunity to talk to more people about the birds! Since Sunday was projected
to be a much prettier day, we invited folks back to the garden to count and
watch birds “unofficially” with no restrictions on the viewing area. We had a
great time both days!
SATURDAY 10/12/13- the official Big Sit Count Day (dawn to dark):
30 people attended off and on throughout the day
27 different species
HIGHLIGHTS were Summer Tanager (female), Eastern Kingbird, 17 Turkey
Vultures (kettling), Northern Flicker, Cedar Waxwings. Saw an Eastern
Phoebe and Yellow-rumped warbler, but not from Circle so could not count.

SUNDAY 10/13/13 (1-7 pm):

30 Different species

kinglets, Red-headed Woodpecker (an immature, being chased by a Northern
Mockingbird!), Pileated Woodpecker, flocks of Cedar Waxwings, Yellow-

Participants played “BIV Big Sit Bingo” and other “bird games”. In all, folks won
42 suet cakes, $25.00 in Jim Rathert photography Gift items, and one
membership to the Missouri River Bird Observatory (Compliments of MRBO).
A most hearty thank you to all the RBAS members attending the 2013 Big Sit!
Your presence and expertise truly added to the enjoyment of the day.
See you at the 2014 Big Sit!
