| What is a "Big Sit"? Well, it is a Free, international birding event open to EVERYONE who enjoys birds and the company of birders! We think the Best description is : "A Tailgate Party for Birders"!! We sit within a defined "circle" and see how many different species of birds we can count from that location in one day (all while enjoying Yummy Food and Terrific Company! SO....Drop by and help us watch for as long or as little as you'd like! Learn from other Birders and share your knowledge. Feel free to bring your favorite Bird Watching Snack and if you can bring a chair that would be helpful too! . |

Friday, February 16th 11:30 am - 2:00 pm Public Bird Banding Demo Join us as the Missouri River Bird Observatory bands birds in the BIV Bird Garden! MRBO has banded over 190 birds in our garden over the years....be with us as they (hopefully) catch and band their 200th bird at this location. We just might do something special to celebrate! Friday, February 16th 5:30 pm a special Presentation by MRBO at BIV! Learn about a new "Young Birders Club" for Missouri as well as MRBO'S other educational projects. NO Reservations required! Simply join us at BIV for refreshments and a great Program! |
| A Tale of Two Little Gray Birds..... As a part of their "Winter Backyard Bird Banding" Program, the Missouri River Bird Observatory banded two beautiful Dark-eyed Juncos in the BIV Bird Garden on Dec. 12th, 2014. The first (pictured left with a green band and white band on its right leg) was not re-sighted in the garden in all of 2015, 2016, or 2017. Suddenly, on January 16, 2018 it appeared! And on February 6th 2018 Steve took it's picture. The second Junco (pictured above with a pink band on one leg and a blue band on the other) also was not re-sighted at all in 2015, and only once in 2016. However, this bird was re-sighted three times in 2017 and again on February 6th of 2018! Where were these birds in the "absent" years? And what brought them back to Ellis blvd this year? Juncos are only in Mid-Missouri during the winter months, nesting far North of us. |
